.05 BAC
A proven strategy to Reduce Alcohol Impaired Car Crashes, Injuries, and Death
It's Time to Get Serious on Drunk Driving
Reducing our state's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) from .08 to .05 is one such strategy that will save lives.
A 2022 study on Utah's .05 BAC law on the impact on impaired driving found the following:
- 19.8% drop in fatal car crashes in the 21-month period following the passage of Utah’s law that lowered the BAC limit to .05
- No large spikes in DUI arrests relative to the passage of the .05 BAC law.
- Continued increase in alcohol sales and tourism.
- 22.1% of drinkers indicated they changed their drinking behaviors once the law went into effect, with the most common change being ensuring transportation was available when drinking away from home.
